CareWell Establishes Urgent Care Centers

The Situation

Mintz has been representing Urgent Care Centers of New England, Inc. (UCCONE) and CareWell Urgent Care Centers of MA P.C., a professional corporation that provides urgent care services at centers managed by UCCONE, since their entry into the Massachusetts market in 2012. Since then, CareWell has become a leading provider of urgent care services in Massachusetts, providing an important access point for patients and reducing use of costly emergency department visits. 

The Approach

We worked with CareWell to establish its first licensed urgent care center in Massachusetts. Since that initial clinic location, CareWell has established over 10 licensed urgent care centers. We worked collaboratively with the client’s clinical, operational, and financial personnel to assure the orderly opening and initial licensure of new locations and assisted with payer provider enrollment processes. Attorneys from our Health Law and Corporate practices teamed to help CareWell and UCCONE establish a new joint venture entity with a third party, and facilitated the transfer of ownership of several CareWell urgent care centers to the joint venture. UCCONE continues to manage the joint venture centers.

In addition to working on regulatory compliance matters, Mintz assisted our client in assuring that the corporate infrastructure supports existing practice functions and opportunities for growth.
