Closing 80+ Deals in 2023 Totaling $4B - Mintz Continues Commitment to Energy Transition

BOSTON, MA—Mintz’s Energy & Sustainability practice continues its commitment to energy transition with more than 80 deal closings totaling $4 billion over the past 12 months, as global investment in energy transition showed continued strength in an overall down market.

 

Mintz Energy & Sustainability deal highlights include representing:

 

Activate Capital, as lead investor in weather intelligence platform Tomorrow.io’s $100M Series E financing

Aspen Aerogels, a technology leader in sustainability and electrification solutions, in its registered direct offering of $75 million.

Boston Metal, a global metals technology solutions company, in the close of its Series C financing, bringing the series total to $262 million.

Cambrian Innovation, a leader in wastewater treatment, in Pennybacker Capital’s investment into the company and commitment of up to $200 million.

Cultivo Land PBC, a climate-focused fintech startup, on its $14 million Series A funding round, bringing the company’s total funding to over $20 million. 

Gradiant Corporation, a global end-to-end solutions provider of advanced water and wastewater treatment, in its $300 million Series D financing. 

Logical Buildings, a leading smart building software and solutions company, in its $110 million virtual power plant (VPP) project facility with Keyframe Capital.

Marubeni, in the development and financing of standalone storage projects in California and Texas.

Mitsui, in the acquisition of a utility scale solar and battery project in Texas, and in the development and tax equity financing of the project ($150 mm +).

NET Power, in the completion of its previously announced business combination with Rice Acquisition Corp. II (NYSE: RONI).  

Quaise, a developer of a new hybrid deep drilling technology for geothermal energy, in raising more than $80 million over several years.

Sojitz, in the sale of its interest in the Kleen Project, a 620-megawatt combined cycle power project in Connecticut, to ArcLight Capital Partners.

In addition to supporting clients on numerous deal closings, Mintz has had the opportunity to be part of several transformative community projects. Most recently, the Project Finance team worked with Building Bridges Across the River (BBAR) on the 11th Street Bridge Park project, a multi-level bridge park connecting Washington, DC to Anacostia.

Steven Shparber (Member, Washington, DC) and Omar Bustami (Associate, San Diego), both of whom were at the Federal Energy Regulatory Commission (FERC) earlier in their careers, joined Mintz in July 2023, bringing extensive energy regulatory, project development, and administrative litigation experience. 

John Lushetsky (Senior Vice President, ML Strategies, Washington, DC), joined Mintz in September 2023 from a senior position in the DOE LPO, advancing Mintz’s ability to advocate for client interests in Congress and federal agencies and regulatory bodies.

Andrew Hulsh (Member, New York), a leading private equity attorney with a focus on renewable energy, joined Mintz in April 2023.

Kristopher Kirkwood a Washington, DC a deal lawyer who advises clients on the development, financing, construction, purchase, and sale of renewable energy and infrastructure projects, was elevated to Member in January 2024.
