Embattled Maine Power Line Foreshadows U.S. Climate Obstacles
Mintz’s Environmental Law Practice Chair Jeffrey R. Porter was quoted in E&E News in an article covering a proposed transmission line in Maine that will prove whether the U.S. can build the electricity infrastructure needed to slash greenhouse gas emissions. Jeff commented on the process to further New England's decarbonization efforts, "The sheer number of permits and appeals speaks to the difficulties of developing transmission in the U.S. today... Across the board, the multiplicity of regulations required and appeals allowable guarantee the amount of time it takes to build the infrastructure we want is going to take longer than the time we have... Congress needs to look at how to streamline permitting and how do we limit appeals once a permit is in hand."
