Mintz announces Dr. Terri Shieh-Newton has been named Patent Prosecution Practitioner of the Year in Managing IP’s Americas Awards 2025. Terri is a leader in Mintz’s Patent Prosecution and Strategic Counseling practice and chair of the firm’s multidisciplinary Life Sciences Artificial Intelligence group. Leveraging over 25 years of experience, she provides value to her clients with her deep industry knowledge and integration of business and commercial plans into the overall patent strategy. Terri helps clients create, manage, and grow patent portfolios which protect their most valuable life sciences innovations and structure new revenue streams. Terri has worked on a range of technical areas including antibodies, cell therapy, chimeric antigen receptors (CARs), biologics and biosimilars, immuno-oncology, gene editing, stem cells, and regenerative medicine, as well as computational biology using artificial intelligence and/or machine learning in the life sciences.
Large pharmaceutical companies, growth companies (public and private), emerging companies, and universities, regularly seek Terri’s strategic guidance for their patent portfolio management. Venture capitalists, investment banks and hedge funds frequently engage Terri to conduct IP diligence on their investments. She has conducted hundreds of IP due diligence for companies and investors at all stages of investment and worked on over $2 billion worth of deals.
Trained as an immunologist, Terri combines her technical experience with a collaborative work style and business-savvy approach to patent prosecution, resulting in her being a true thought partner and advisor to her clients. In addition to earning her PhD in Cellular and Molecular Medicine from Johns Hopkins School of Medicine, she holds a J.D. from Santa Clara Law School, a Certificate in Artificial Intelligence in Pharma and Biotech from MIT, and a Certificate in AI in Healthcare from Harvard Medical School.
As a result of her success, Terri has received numerous industry awards and recognition. She is consistently ranked by Chambers in the category of Intellectual Property: Patent Prosecution-California since 2022. She was also recognized in the 2023 LMG Life Sciences Americas Awards: Patent Strategy of the Year -California, ranked in the 2024 IAM Patent 1000, and named by The San Francisco Business Times as one of the 100 Most Influential Women in Business.
