Mintz Shortlisted for 3 Managing Intellectual Property Americas Awards 2022

BOSTON – Mintz is pleased to share that two attorneys and the firm’s Patent practice have been shortlisted in the 2022 edition of Managing Intellectual Property’s (MIP) Americas Awards. The awards recognize the “remarkable achievements and developments” of firms, individuals and companies impacting the IP sector over the past year.

Dr. Terri Shieh-Newton, a Member in the firm’s San Francisco office, has been shortlisted for U.S. National Practitioner of the Year (Patent Prosecution). Dr. Shieh-Newton plays a strategic role for her clients as she guides their patent strategy, portfolio management, and investments. For over 23 years, she has been representing diagnostics and therapeutics clients in developing, managing and protecting valuable patent portfolios, including invention identification, patent prosecution, landscape searches and white space analysis, and in inter partes reviews and other post-grant proceedings. Dr. Shieh-Newton also works with investors to conduct rigorous IP diligence to identify and mitigate risks while providing recommendations for strengthening the IP portfolios in which they invest. Furthermore, she is the founder and co-chair of the firm’s Life Sciences Artificial Intelligence group, having brought together high-tech and biotech attorneys and patent agents to seamlessly serve clients innovating at the intersection of life sciences and artificial intelligence.

Michael T. Renaud, Member and Chair of the firm’s Intellectual Property Division, has been shortlisted for the second consecutive year for Massachusetts Litigator of the Year. He is one of six leading IP attorneys across the state named to the prestigious shortlist based on his work over the last twelve months. Mr. Renaud is an IP litigator and patent strategist who helps clients protect and generate revenue from their patent holdings. He has led teams to success in the International Trade Commission, at the Patent Trial and Appeal Board, in Federal district courts, and at the Court of Appeals for the Federal Circuit. In recognition of his professional accomplishments, Mr. Renaud has made Intellectual Asset Magazine’s (IAM) “Strategy 300” and “Patent 1000” lists and been named an “IP Star” for patent law by MIP. Notably, in 2021 and 2022, he was on IAM’s “Strategy 300 Global Leaders” list – an elite class of leading strategic thinkers in the IP world.

Additionally, the firm was recognized for U.S. Regional Patent Prosecution (West). Recently, the editors of IAM’s annual “Patent 1000” had this to say about the firm’s West Coast practice, “When it comes to building patent portfolios and developing and implementing strategies that maximise their value, Mintz is world-class.” The attorneys of the practice share high-profile clients such as Genentech, Gilead, Janssen, Roche, and DuPont across offices and areas of technical expertise, and serve as primary patent counsel for companies that have achieved “unicorn” status, such as 10x Genomics. Beyond Dr. Shieh-Newton’s accolades, San Diego attorneys Kenneth Jenkins, Ph.D. and Fred Hernandez, Chair of the firmwide Patent Prosecution Practice, and San Francisco-based attorney William B. Kezer, Ph.D., are consistently acknowledged.

Winners will be announced at an awards ceremony on April 7 in New York City. View the full MIP Awards 2022 shortlist for the Americas here.
