The Energy & Clean Technology Practice of Mintz, Cohn, Ferris, Glovsky and Popeo, P.C. has been selected as one of the “Top 10 Clean Technology Firms” by LMG Clean Technology and Renewable Energy. In addition, Thomas R. Burton, III, and Sahir Surmeli, Co-chairs of the firm’s Energy & Clean Technology Practice were named to the “Clean Tech 100” list and the firm’s Corporate and Securities, Intellectual Property and Regulatory Sections were recognized in the inaugural edition of the guide.
The LMG Clean Technology and Renewable Energy guide (a Euromoney Institutional Investor publication) provides an in-depth portrait of the legal clean technology market. It strives to be the ultimate resource for in-house counsel in identifying leading law firms and attorneys in the clean technology and renewable energy industries. Firms and individuals featured in the 2013 guide were selected by LMG Clean Technology and Renewable Energy based on research involving surveys and interviews with both peers and clients.
“We are honored to be recognized as one of the top Clean Technology law firms across multiple disciplines,” said Mr. Burton. “These rankings are particularly gratifying as they are based not only on the success of our practice, but also on positive reviews from our peers and clients.”
“It is gratifying that the firm’s focus on and reputation for client service was one of the driving factors for being named one of the top ten law firms. Our team has completed 300 deals in the sector – we work hard to understand the businesses of our clients and to help our clients win,” added Mr. Surmeli.
Mintz’s Energy & Clean Technology Practice was recognized by LMG Clean Technology and Renewable Energy as one of the top ten clean technology firms. According to the guide, firms were selected based on the “breadth of their clean technology and renewable energy practices, their representative experience, and the recognition of their peers.” Additionally, the guide identified Mintz’s high-quality client service as a deciding factor in the selection process.
Mr. Burton and Mr. Surmeli were each named to the “Clean Tech 100” list. The attorneys included in this listing represent the top practitioners in the clean technology and renewable energy industries as identified by their colleagues.
Mintz’s Corporate and Securities Section is recognized in the guide as one of the fastest growing corporate teams in the industry. The publication cites the firm’s more than 300 energy and clean tech transactions as evidence “that companies continually trust Mintz’s expertise to get the job done,” noting that the firm’s “capabilities in the renewable energy and clean technology industry set them apart as one of the most adept firms in the industry.”
The firm’s IP Section, which the guide says, “consists of a large number of attorneys that few firms can match,” achieved LMG Clean Technology & Renewable Energy’s highest ranking. Clients interviewed commented, “They understand what we want to achieve as their clients and are helping us realize our goals that we set out to accomplish in the industry.”
LMG Clean Technology and Renewable Energy identified Mintz as a leading firm handling regulatory issues for the industry. A competitor described the firm’s regulatory team as one “of the more impressive groups in the clean technology space.”
Since January 2006, Mintz attorneys have closed 300 transactions in the energy and clean technology sector including: venture capital transactions (representing companies and investors), initial public offerings and follow-on offerings, private placements, M&A deals, technology licensing and joint venture transactions, totaling approximately $5.4 billion in transaction value. In addition, the group handles the development, financing, and construction of hundreds of megawatts of energy generating facilities.
The Energy & Clean Technology Practice has been ranked #2 nationally among top Clean Technology law firms, according to Watershed Capital Group, and the practice was listed as a "Best Law Firm" by U.S. News & World Report, both in Boston and nationally. Recently, the practice was also ranked among the 2012 “40 Hottest Partners in Bioenergy and Bio-based Materials” by Biofuels Digest.
