Tax Lawyers Sound Alarm About Enhanced CRA Powers In Federal Budget
Partner Katy Pitch spoke to Law360 Canada in an article about how enhanced enforcement rules proposed for the Canada Revenue Agency (CRA) may lead to a higher financial burden on taxpayers. Under the rule, the CRA could also require information from taxpayers under oath, which could limit taxpayers’ rights to due process.
Katy said, “I can imagine situations with unsophisticated taxpayers who are not going to get these protections. And because of the oath requirement, there will be many taxpayers, who would not have normally involved lawyers, having to consult with lawyers now in answering questions, which will slow down the process and cost taxpayers more money in answering the CRA.”
