In an article published by The American Lawyer, Mintz Member and Chair of the firm’s Energy & Sustainability Practice Tom Burton was among corporate lawyers to comment on the sharp decline in the special purpose acquisition company (SPAC) initial public offering market, which he said can be attributed to several business and accounting factors such as decreased appetite from private investment in public equity (PIPE) investors to support recent SPAC valuations, as well as the recent U.S. Securities and Exchange Commission decision to qualify warrants as a liability rather than equity on financial statements.

In an article published by Bloomberg Law, Mintz Member Jeff Porter commented on the oral argument before the U.S. Supreme Court in Guam v. United States. The Supreme Court will determine whether a 2004 Clean Water Act settlement between the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency and Guam will prevent Guam from seeking from the U.S. Navy contribution toward the cost of cleaning up a former Navy dump in Guam under the Comprehensive Environmental Response, Compensation and Liability Act, also known as the Superfund statute.

The Boston Business Journal reported that some of Boston’s biggest law firms, including Mintz, grew their profits by double-digit percentages last year, despite the COVID-19 pandemic and related economic challenges. The article included commentary from Mintz Managing Member Bob Bodian on firm management decisions such as restoring precautionary pay cuts and issuing retroactive pay for those impacted, as well as increasing senior Associate salaries. He also discussed the success of the firm’s Corporate Practice and strong dealmaking activity in 2021. After a better-than-expected year in terms of revenue and more, and with substantial economic growth expected, Mr. Bodian said that “we’re very optimistic about where things are headed.”
