Mintz's Gerber Recognized for Hult Prize Work
Mintz attorney Kristin Gerber garnered recognition in a Huffington Post article last week for her work in the social entrepreneurship sector. Kristin was highlighted as one of the Hult Prize Foundation’s “Great Partners” – people who have engaged directly with teams competing for the Hult Prize to create value – for the services she has provided to Hult Prize competitors over the past few months. She has spent at least 40 hours providing legal advice for free, serving as a legal mentor for the competition’s six finalists. The Hult Prize Foundation is a not-for-profit organization dedicated, in its own words, to “launching the world’s next wave of social entrepreneurs.” Every year, university students around the world compete in six rounds of competition – five regional rounds and one online round – during which they develop ideas for social enterprises that help tackle global challenges. The focus of this year’s competition is the lack of access to quality early childhood education for children living in urban slums.
The teams selected as finalists then move on to the “Hult Accelerator” phase of the competition, during which they attend a six-week program of intensive entrepreneurial seminars. It is during this phase that Kristin has served as a legal mentor, providing formation advice and helping competitors navigate the potentially complex legal issues that arise as they begin to refine their business models. Following this experience, each of the finalists will attend the Hult Prize Global Finals, hosted by the Clinton Global Initiative during its annual meeting in New York. At the conclusion of the finals, a winning team will be selected to receive $1 million in seed funding to implement their idea via their start-up.
As the finals loom on the horizon in late September, Kristin has high hopes for the finalists with whom she has worked. The winner will be announced on September 26. Congratulations Kristin and good luck to all Hult Prize competitors!
