Telephone and Texting Compliance News — August 2023
We are pleased to present our latest edition of Telephone and Texting Compliance News, providing insights and news related to the Telephone Consumer Protection Act (TCPA). In this month’s newsletter, we discuss the Federal Trade Commission’s National Do Not Call (DNC) Registry fee increases for telemarketers, which take effect on October 1. We also cover a record Federal Communications Commission (Commission) fine of nearly $300 million imposed against 10 entities for robocalling and spoofing. In adopting the Forfeiture Order imposing the fine, the Commission affirmed an earlier finding that five of the robocallers made over five billion robocalls to about 550 million phone numbers in a three-month span in 2021. The calls encouraged recipients to follow prompts to speak with an auto warranty specialist. Additionally, we report on the FCC’s re-selection of a USTelecom-led industry group as its Registered Traceback Consortium, which is responsible for conducting private-led efforts to trace back the origin of suspected unlawful robocalls.
