Protecting Pathways to Reproductive Health
Return to 2024 Pro Bono Portfolio
In a pivotal time for reproductive rights, Mintz’s dedication to protecting access to health care has gained new urgency. In the Spring of 2024, the firm joined a nationwide effort to provide amicus briefing in a critical US Supreme Court case, Idaho v. United States and Moyle v. United States, with significant implications for emergency abortion care. Responding quickly, former Mintz attorney Jessica Goudreault, Member and Pro Bono Committee Chair Sue Finegan, and attorneys Emily Kanstroom Musgrave, Meredith Leary, Evan Piercey, Jennifer Yoonjee Kim, Mitchell Clough, and Michael Alario, co-authored an amicus brief on behalf of law professors urging the Court to uphold the federal Emergency Medical Treatment and Labor Act (EMTALA). Coordinating closely with the National Women’s Law Center and a coalition of advocates, the team worked tirelessly to complete the brief in just two weeks.
Beyond this high-profile case, Mintz attorneys have expanded their reach by partnering with the Center for Reproductive Rights, bringing together close to 60 attorneys and staff members to conduct crucial research and policy analysis on both Massachusetts-based and national reproductive laws. On the West Coast, attorneys actively support the Southern California Legal Alliance for Reproductive Justice, providing legal guidance on health care matters for those in need. And, working alongside Lawyers for Good Government (L4GG) and the American College of Obstetricians and Gynecologists, Mintz staffs a team of attorneys that continues to provide research support for the Policy Resource Hub, a comprehensive 50-state resource on reproductive laws. Through these collaborative efforts, the firm remains a steadfast advocate in the evolving landscape of reproductive health care.
It was a privilege to work with such a dedicated coalition of advocates, including the remarkable professors who partnered with us on this brief. I was grateful to be part of this talented Mintz team: everyone jumped in immediately and worked around the clock together until the brief was filed. At least for now, women can still access the medical care they need in Idaho.
