Mintz Continues Growth in Toronto with New Partners
Mintz announces Adam Banack, Geoffrey Cher, and Emily Y. Fan have joined as partners in the firm’s Toronto office. Since opening just over 18 months ago, Mintz’s Toronto office has grown nearly sevenfold to handle clients’ most sophisticated business issues.
“We are thrilled to welcome this talented group of lawyers to our growing team in Toronto,” said Bob Bodian, Managing Member. “Their arrival reinforces our strategic commitment to this important region and enhances our ability to provide US and Canadian businesses and investors with a full scope of legal services.”
Adam Banack focuses his practice on energy and infrastructure project development and procurement. He advises project participants spanning the energy infrastructure ecosystem — representing government authorities, developers, construction contractors, service providers, lenders, and underwriters — on all aspects of development and financing of major energy projects. His experience in this area encompasses matters relating to nuclear, wind, solar, biomass and hydrogen generation projects, energy storage projects, and energy transmission projects. Adam advises clients throughout the life cycle of major projects, including the negotiation of construction and refurbishment contracts, operation and maintenance agreements, supply agreements, service agreements, and power purchase agreements. His practice includes advising public authorities, Canadian government-owned Crown corporations, and private organizations on complex procurement matters in the defense, technology, and infrastructure sectors. Before joining Mintz, Adam was counsel at a major Canadian law firm, where he worked on matters involving energy and infrastructure project development as well as procurement.
Geoffrey Cher brings a multifaceted approach to his corporate practice, specializing in alternative assets, financial services, technology, and the digital economy. Geoff partners with a diverse array of clients, from emerging growth private and public companies in Canada and the US, as well as their founders, and a wide range of capital sponsors navigating complex cross-border legal landscapes. He excels at providing strategic and pragmatic advice while guiding clients through business expansion, corporate transactions and developing pathways to liquidity events. His expertise includes structuring access to private equity, venture capital, real estate, private debt, and digital assets, as well as delivering related regulatory and registration advice. Geoff has advised on a range of innovative projects, including some of Canada’s first alternative trading and payment systems, digital marketplaces, peer-to-peer lending applications, and advanced funding platforms. He has been recognized for his expertise in fintech and blockchain matters, frequently speaking on related topics and contributing to industry discussions. Before joining Mintz, Geoff was a partner at a Toronto-based law firm, where he led the firm’s digital economy initiatives focused on matters involving the fintech sector and blockchain technology.
Emily Y. Fan is a commercial litigator focusing on matters involving complex shareholders’ and business disputes, class actions defense, and bankruptcy/insolvency. She represents clients in a broad array of industries including emerging technologies, SaaS, automotive, health, telecommunications, professional services, and banking. Emily’s experience includes representing major accounting firms in public inquiries and contractual disputes, representing receivers and creditors in receiverships related to real estate developments, acting as counsel to one of North America’s largest private developers in a dispute within a third-party restructuring proceeding, serving as defense counsel to high-stakes fraud claims, and risk advisory work. Prior to joining Mintz, Emily led the Dispute Resolution and Advocacy Group and was a partner at one of Toronto’s leading boutique litigation firms. She joins Mintz to chair its Dispute Resolution and Advocacy practice in Canada.
“With the largest fully integrated Canadian office of any major US law firm, Mintz is uniquely positioned to address our clients’ needs on both sides of the border,” said Mitch Frazer, Managing Partner of Mintz’s Toronto office. “Adam, Geoff, and Emily add valuable depth and breadth to our tier one team of lawyers here and we look forward to their contribution as we continue to change the face of law in Canada.”
Located at 200 Bay Street in the heart of the Downtown Core, Mintz’s Toronto office offers a full suite of legal services to support Canada’s growing life sciences, private equity, energy, real estate, and technology sectors. The office has deep experience providing cross-border legal insights and resources to clients doing business in Canada and the US.
